Officer-involved shooting leaves one injured in Newport

An officer-involved shooting in Newport Beach Thursday night left one person injured, police said.

The shooting occurred at a 7-Eleven near Superior and Placentia avenues where police responded to a 911 call about a disturbance around 8:15 p.m.,

When officers arrived, they found a male subject in an altercation with one of the store’s employees, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

An officer tried to intervene, and when the male subject turned toward the officer, the shooting occurred, Manzella said.

One person was injured in the shooting, police said. No police officers were hurt.

The injured party was taken to a trauma center for treatment, said Newport police Sgt. Mike James.

Police did not yet know if the male subject involved in the altercation was armed.

Newport Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m. and took one person to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, according to Battalion Chief Ron Gamble.

The extent of his injuries are unknown, police said.
