Nora Laue Hester, who was admired for her gracious heart, kindness of spirit, humility and inherent elegance passed on November 1st at the age of 101. Nora was the epitome of a lady, even as she faced her final days among her family and caregivers.

Nora was born in Effingham, Illinois on July 10, 1913. She graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville Illinois and began working in her father’s Ford Dealership in Effingham. She soon met her beloved Charley with whom she enjoyed a 60 year love affair ending only with Charley’s death in 1996.

Nora and Charley moved to California with their young family seeking a better climate to assist in his tuberculosis recovery. Charley subsequently embarked on a long career as a land developer/financier, during which time Nora was always a loving and supporting wife.

Although Nora and Charley traveled extensively throughout the world their main focus, besides their family, was their devotion to Philanthropic causes in Orange County. Nora was passionate about CHOC Children’s Hospital, Hoag Memorial Hospital (which has named its main lobby “Nora and Charles Hester Main Lobby”), Segerstrom Center for the Arts, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and several others. The enduring friendships Nora and Charley fostered through these associations enriched their lives immensely. Nora’s other longtime joys were Cameo Philharmonic, National Charity League, and her various Bridge groups.

Nora shared so many wonderful times with her three daughters: Charlene Immell, Marilyn Gianulias Robbins, Janet Hamilton and their husbands, Mike, Bill and Phil. She derived great pleasure from actively participating in the lives of her expanding family! “Super Grammy” will be greatly missed by her 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Per Nora’s wishes, a private family service has been planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in honor of Nora Hester to the Hester Family Endowment at either the CHOC Children’s Hospital Foundation (1201 W. La Veta Avenue, Orange CA 92868) or to the Hoag Hospital Foundation in Newport Beach (500 Superior Suite 360; Newport Beach, CA 92660.)
