A man was injured when a mast fell on him while crews were trying to install it on a new trimaran in Newport Harbor on Thursday afternoon, according to authorities and a witness.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. in a channel off Lido Park Drive, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

David Quesada, who works as a boat captain in Newport Beach, said he was passing the watercraft when something slipped and a new carbon-fiber mast fell backward, hitting a crew member. The mast snapped in half when it struck a railing along Lido Park Drive.

The crew member was knocked unconscious and suffered cuts on his head from the impact, Quesada said.

Firefighters took the man to Hoag Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.
