Four people displaced by Costa Mesa blaze

Huntington Beach firefighters joined local forces in responding to a blaze Monday morning that displaced four residents from their homes on Sandi Lane, a small cul-de-sac off Canyon Drive near Victoria Street in Costa Mesa.

It took 36 firefighters about 25 minutes to control the flames, which were reported just before noon, said Battalion Chief Tim Vasin of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Vasin said flames started in the attached garage of a town home and spread to the second floor of the unit, which sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. He said the cause is unknown.

The blaze caused less-severe smoke and fire damage to another unit, Vasin said. Two residents were displaced from each home, according to the battalion chief.

Firefighters estimated the structural damage to the two homes at about $200,000, with an additional $50,000 in property damage.

“It was a pretty significant fire,” Vasin said.

Nobody was injured, but one Costa Mesa firefighter went to the hospital as a precaution.
