A retirement party for Ed Fawcett, president and chief executive of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at Skosh Monahan’s, 2000 Newport Blvd.

OCC names new vice president

Kevin Ballinger, executive dean of instruction at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, has been named vice president of instruction, the college announced Wednesday.

Ballinger had served as executive dean of instruction at OCC since July, when John Weispfenning left to become president of Santiago Canyon College in Orange. Ballinger previously spent nearly 20 years as dean of the consumer health sciences division

Holiday party brings out fun and toys

The Island Hotel in Newport Beach held its holiday party Monday night along with its 17th annual Toys for Tots campaign to gather Christmas toys for needy children.

The event included pop-up kitchens, music from Aqua Lounge, champagne and refreshments.

Youth shelter benefit coming to Costa Mesa

Casa Youth Shelter, a Los Alamitos-based organization that provides an emergency home for youths ages 12 to 17, will present the fundraiser A Night on the Town on Jan. 10 in Costa Mesa.

The event will begin with dinner at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel, followed by a performance of the play “Kinky Boots” at the nearby Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Etnies owner provides shoes for kids

Newport Beach resident Pierre-Andre Senizergues, owner and chief executive of Etnies, hosted a Holiday Festival on Friday at the shoe and apparel company’s Lake Forest offices, where Etnies provided new pairs of shoes to about 300 children.

The festivities featured Santa Claus, games and professional athletes including skateboarder Ryan Sheckler.

The annual event has provided more than 4,000 pairs of shoes to local kids in the past 10 years, the company said.

Computer programming courses at church

HolyCoding.org, which provides computer programming classes at St. James the Great Episcopal Church in Newport Beach, has announced its 2015 course schedule, including Scratch, website development with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and Swift, a new programming language endorsed by Apple.

UCI program to train Japanese teachers

UC Irvine Extension, the university’s continuing-education arm, has been selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education to provide development training for teachers who teach English to junior and senior high school students in Japan.

UC Irvine Extension will host the 82 Japanese teachers for 11 weeks beginning in January. The program will give the teachers the chance to visit Orange County schools and live with English-speaking families.
