Services are Friday for former Costa Mesa Mayor Jack Hammett

A series of public events for former Costa Mesa Mayor Jack Hammett are scheduled for Friday throughout the city.

Recognition of “Mr. Costa Mesa,” who died Saturday at the age of 94, begins with services at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim Catholic Church, 1964 Orange Ave.

A graveside service at Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park and Mortuary will follow. The memorial park is 1625 Gisler Ave.

The day concludes with a celebration of life at the Orange County fairgrounds, in the Hangar facility, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Hammett, a U.S. Navy veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, served as mayor from 1972 to 1974. He also served on the city Planning Commission and spoke to area schools about his wartime service as a member of the Freedom Committee of Orange County.
