Coast Community College District Trustee Mary Hornbuckle will replace Lorraine Prinsky as board president for 2014.

Hornbuckle, who served as vice president this year, was unanimously elected at the trustees’ organizational meeting Wednesday night. Board presidents are selected annually.

Hornbuckle has represented the Costa Mesa area since 2005. She also sat on Costa Mesa City Council from 1984-1996.

She said her most urgent goal for 2014 will be to address the district’s accreditation woes, which began in March after the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges warned the district and its three colleges that they must correct governance and educational issues to remain accredited.

Accreditation is a stamp of educational quality that ensures students can transition to four-year universities.

“The board of trustees and the staff have been working diligently to update policies and procedures and we have reexamined the practices that were mentioned in our evaluations. The campuses are working on written responses and correcting any deficiencies in their reports,” she said. “Once we have a clear report from ACCJC, we can refocus our efforts on student success, which is what we are all about, after all.”

David Grant was elected vice president and Prinsky was elected clerk.

Grant has served on the board representing the Newport Beach area since 2010. He was previously an administrator at Orange Coast College for 34 years and served as the school’s fifth president from 1989 until his retirement in 1995.
