Report of gunman at mall prove unfounded

Costa Mesa police responded to reports of a man with a gun Friday night at South Coast Plaza, but said they appear to have been false alarms.

Lt. Bryan Glass said the incident began as a verbal dispute between two customers, a male and a female, at Salvatore Ferragamo. The woman told a clerk at the shoe store that the man had a gun.

Police responded to the clerk’s police call around 7:30 p.m. and within minutes had detained the man. They did not find a weapon on him, Glass said.

No arrests were made. Police did not order an evacuation or lockdown of the area, Glass said.

Several shoppers reported on Twitter, however, that parts of the shopping center were shut down for a time.
