Water main break closes Sunflower Avenue at Harbor Boulevard

A water main break near the border of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana snarled traffic in the area of Sunflower Avenue and Harbor Boulevard Tuesday, authorities said.

Crews closed both westbound lanes and one of two eastbound lanes on Sunflower between Harbor and Susan Street while crews accessed the broken pipe.

Santa Ana officials said the break disrupted some water service, but Costa Mesa Public Services Director Ernesto Munoz said he wasn’t aware of issues for Costa Mesa residents.

Although the break didn’t affect its customers, the Mesa Water District sent a crew to help shut off the pipe when it burst around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Mesa Water spokeswoman Noelle Collins said.

Santa Ana officials expected all water service to be restored by 5 p.m. and road repairs to be completed by 9 p.m.

Lanes would reopen as they become safe for traffic, authorities said.
