Driver suspected of DUI as car slams into garage

A man may have been driving under the influence when his BMW crashed into a Costa Mesa home Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Around 7:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the 2800 block of Velasco Lane, near Sonora Elementary School. A newer-model BMW had plowed into the corner of a single-story garage attached to a house, Battalion Chief Tim Vasin said. The impact damaged a load-bearing wall, so crews shored up the corner to keep the structure from collapsing, Vasin said.

He estimated the wreck caused about $10,000 in damage to the structure.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Zack Hoferitza said. No further details were immediately available, he added.

The homeowner was inside at the time, but no one was injured in the crash, according to fire officials.
