Newport Beach police said they believe they have arrested a professional burglar who targets wealthy neighborhoods.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, a private security guard called police to say he had detained a man trying to climb over the back gate of a home in the 4600 block of Brighton Road.

When officers arrived, they found a grappling hook, gloves, a pry bar and other burglary tools in the man’s backpack, police said.

Newport police then arrested Larry Lee Everett, 57, of Orange on suspicion of attempted residential burglary.

Police said in a news release that they believe Everett preyed on high-end homes and focused on expensive jewelry.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that Everett is connected to other Newport Beach burglaries.

He is being held on $50,000 bail and two burglary warrants for $50,000 and $1 million, police said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the case call Det. Dave Darling at (949) 644-3799 or the hotline at (800) 550-NBPD.

The department accepts anonymous messages.
