OCC recycling center will take turkey grease

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District is reminding home cooks that oil used to deep-fry turkeys and other foods this Thanksgiving can be recycled.

“Oil poured down the kitchen sink can solidify and clog sewer pipes, which can potentially cause backups and overflows,” the district said in a news release. “It is forbidden to pour oil in storm drains due to the adverse impact upon wildlife and waterways.”

Orange Coast College’s recycling center will be accepting cooled cooking oil in containers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The center is off Adams Avenue near Pinecreek Drive, on the northern end of the campus.

The oil will be used to make candles, soaps, cosmetics and biodiesel, district officials said.

For more about grease recycling, the district has a video on its website, https://www.cmsdca.gov.
