Newport Beach police Friday arrested a man suspected of kidnapping a woman from the Balboa Peninsula and holding her at gunpoint.

Bradley John King, 42, of Rhode Island, was arguing with a woman while they were out for dinner and drinks Thursday evening, Newport police said.

When the argument escalated, King allegedly forced her into his car near 28th Street and Balboa Boulevard at about 7:15 p.m., police added.

When she tried to escape, King pointed a gun at the victim’s head and forced her to stay in the car while he drove to Anaheim, according to police.

Once in Anaheim, the woman escaped and told police there what happened, according to a news release from the Newport Beach Police Department.

Anaheim police and Newport detectives tracked down King early Friday and arrested him during a traffic stop.

Newport police booked King on suspicion of kidnapping and will ask the Orange County district attorney to charge him with assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a loaded gun as well.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Det. Garrett Fitzgerald at (949) 644-3797 or call Newport’s police hotline at (800) 550-NBPD.
