Drizzly jog-a-thon runs up funds for Newport Elementary

Share

A little drizzle Friday morning didn’t stop 500 Newport Beach students from running in their annual beachside jog-a-thon.

The Newport Elementary School Foundation has presented the jog-a-thon, one of its main fundraising events, for the past four years.

Matt Wiley, vice president of fundraising, estimated the run will raise $30,000 for the foundation this year. Final numbers were not available late Friday afternoon.

In previous years, the money raised has gone to art programs, staff development and additional classroom teachers the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is unable to fund.

Last year’s jog-a-thon was a wet one as well.

“My wife said to me this morning that it must be jog-a-thon today because it’s drizzling,” Wiley said. “Thankfully we didn’t get too much rain.”
