Righeimer maintains lead against Humphrey in Costa Mesa City Council race

Share

Costa Mesa Mayor Jim Righeimer maintained a small but potentially decisive lead over challenger Jay Humphrey on Saturday night in the ongoing ballot counting in the race for City Council.

Righeimer held a 47-vote lead at 5 p.m., with 7,524 votes to Humphrey’s 7,477. Humphrey is a former councilman.

The tally remained unchanged from the day before.

There were about 50 votes still uncounted countywide Saturday night but it’s unclear how many of those ballots will count toward the Costa Mesa tallies.

Orange County Registrar Neal Kelley has said his goal is to tabulate all outstanding ballots by Monday.

Over last weekend, the gap was closer at 23. On Monday it was 35, on Tuesday it was 21, and on Wednesday it was 37. Righeimer had led by 48 votes Thursday night.

School board trustee Katrina Foley remained solidly in the lead of eight candidates, locking up the first of two open seats.

The election results could be recounted, should Righeimer or Humphrey request it, at the initiator’s expense.
