Husband, 911 dispatcher help Irvine woman deliver newborn

Holding her new daughter in a hospital Tuesday afternoon, Sarina Jordan joked that she got the unmedicated labor and birth she had planned.

There was just one wrinkle.

“I never thought I would have a baby at home,” she said.

When Jordan started feeling labor pains Monday afternoon at her home on Peony Street in Irvine, she assumed it was a false start. Her due date was two weeks away.

But about 10:30 a.m., she realized that her second daughter was about to be born and there was no slowing her down, Jordan said.

She called her husband, Jon, at work in Long Beach.

“He made it home in record time, in time to catch the baby,” Jordan said.

He arrived minutes after Jordan’s water broke and immediately called 911.

The Orange County Fire Authority praised the parents and the emergency dispatcher.

“The dad did a phenomenal job staying calm and helping his wife safely deliver a healthy baby girl,” said Capt. Steve Concialdi.

On the 911 recording, dispatcher Mishele Richards can be heard coaching Jon Jordan to gently press on the baby’s head to keep her from coming out too quickly.

Within minutes, the baby was born.

Paramedics, arriving minutes later, gave the infant oxygen and helped Jon cut the cord.

Sarina said her husband was calm through the entire situation, and when the pain of labor was over, she was relieved.

“I knew everything was going to be OK,” she said.

On Tuesday, Sarina and her healthy 7-pound 5-ounce baby were resting at the Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills.

The couple named her Amalyn, a Thai name that means “without impurity,” Sarina said.

“My 5-year-old daughter is so over the moon with a little sister,” she said.
