An Irvine man was killed and his 4-year-old son was seriously hurt when a car crashed into them while they were trick-or-treating on Halloween night.

According to police, 65-year-old John Roger Alcorn was crossing the street with his son at about 7:15 p.m. Friday when a Mazda 3 struck them, causing “significant injuries.”

The Mazda was on West Yale Loop near Burwood Street when it hit them, police said.

Authorities took the trick-or-treaters to a local trauma center where Alcorn died from his injuries at about 8:40 p.m. that night.

The 4-year-old is in critical but stable condition, police said Saturday morning.

Authorities released the woman driving the Mazda after she stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Irvine police declined to release additional information on their investigation, including whether the victims were in a crosswalk or how fast the car was traveling.

Investigators asked that anyone who saw the Irvine collision call police at (949) 724-7024.

Just more than half an hour before the Irvine crash, three other trick-or-treaters were killed in Santa Ana when a driver hit them and fled the scene, according to authorities.

Three 13-year-old girls were crossing the street in a crosswalk near Old Grand Street and Fairhaven Avenue when a car traveling at a high rate of speed slammed into them, according to Santa Ana police.

All three girls were declared dead at the scene, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

Two of the girls were twins, and the third victim was a friend of theirs, Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna said.

Santa Ana police found a Honda SUV they think struck the girls, but they are still looking for two men who were inside the vehicle during the crash.
