Irvine police said a bystander who noted a suspicious car’s license plate helped them track down a burglary suspect this week.

An Irvine resident heard glass breaking around 1 p.m. Wednesday and saw a car near a neighbor’s home, police said in a news release.

The resident took down the car’s license plate number and then saw a man leave the home and drive off, police said.

Detectives used the information to trace a 23-year-old Castaic resident.

On Thursday, Irvine detectives arrested the man, Bishoy Fahmy, in Los Angeles County after he left a pawn shop, police said. Investigators also found jewelry and other valuables that they believe he stole.

Irvine police said they believe Fahmy is responsible for two burglaries at homes near Jamboree Road and Portola Parkway.

Fahmy is on probation in Los Angeles County for a weapons charge, Irvine police said. When investigators searched his home after the arrest, they found two loaded guns, police said.

Fahmy is being held in Orange County Jail with bail set at $50,000, according to Sheriff’s Department records.
