Save Our Youth, a nonprofit group that provides tutoring and other after-school activities for students in Costa Mesa’s lower-income Westside, received a $20,000 grant for its scholarship program from the Birches Foundation this month.

In the past 10 years, SOY has awarded scholarships to more than 300 high school students for their college education.

With the gift from the Costa Mesa-based Birches Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization, SOY has $74,000 for scholarships this year. SOY officials hope to raise an additional $70,000 to get back to the 2012 level of funding, when it awarded $155,000 in scholarships, according to a news release.

“These scholarship awards help many of our low-income students meet the ever-rising cost of a college education,” the release stated.
