Trash bin display is meant to educate

Trash bins now decorate libraries and community centers around Newport Beach.

City staff expects the bins to remain for about a month as part of an effort to show residents what their new carts might look like if the city approves a contract to outsource its trash services in November. Residents would have three size options for containers — 35, 65 and 95 gallons — which will work with an automated collection system.

Currently, city law requires containers be no larger than 35 gallons, but most residents put trash outside their homes in bins of their choosing. City haulers then pick up the trash by hand.

In September, the City Council voted to pursue a contract with a private company to take over the service. With that change would come new, standardized bins, although trash bags would also be picked up, staff said.

Sample trash bins can be found at the Balboa, Corona del Mar and Mariners branch libraries, in addition to the Oasis Senior Center and Newport Beach Civic Center.
