CdM students warned about ‘compromising photos’

Corona del Mar High School students and parents were warned over the weekend about the punishment for distributing and possessing “compromising photos of a minor.”

School Resource Officer Vlad Anderson, in an email sent out Saturday, told parents that students who share inappropriate photos of other minors could be committing felonies.

Newport Beach police and district officials declined to provide specifics about the incident that prompted the email. However, officials followed up the initial message with another one Monday that explained the situation as “an unfortunate event between students in our school community.”

Anderson also declined to comment on the incident.

“At times, minors share pictures, images, videos, etc. that are inappropriate (ie: sexual) in nature,” the second email said. “The distribution of such images is harmful not only to those in the images, but also those disseminating them. Our message sent Saturday sought to quickly respond in order to protect the victim, mitigate further dissemination and prevent uninformed minors from unknowingly breaking the law and committing a felony by sharing the images.”

The email advised parents to be cognizant of the images their children may be taking, viewing and sending through text messages or social media.

Newport police are investigating a specific event related to the email, but could not elaborate further, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.
