Newport to unveil statue given by Japanese sister city

In honor of the 30-year sister city relationship between Newport Beach and Okazaki, Japan, a statue of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, a gift from Okazaki, will be unveiled Tuesday at the Newport Beach Public Library during a public ceremony featuring officials from both cities.

Newport Beach Mayor Rush Hill and Sister City Assn. President Liddy Paulsen will welcome Okazaki’s mayor and more than 30 other dignitaries at the event, which begins at 11 a.m. in the library’s Bamboo Courtyard, 1000 Avocado Ave.

The ceremony will include a traditional Japanese dance that celebrates joy and longevity. A reception with light refreshments will follow.

Okazaki is about 200 miles west of Tokyo and has a population of about 350,000.
