Road closures set for Newport Beach Triathlon

Sunday’s 37th annual Newport Beach Triathlon will cause road closures in the Back Bay and Newport Dunes areas this weekend, the city said Friday.

From noon Saturday to noon Sunday, southbound Back Bay Drive will be closed from Shellmaker Road to the Dunes entrance.

From 3 a.m. to noon Sunday, the northbound side will be closed.

Also from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday, Back Bay Drive will be closed between the Dunes entrance and Eastbluff Drive, and Eastbluff Drive will be closed between Vista del Sol and Jamboree Road.

Trails at Back Bay View Park and behind the Newport Dunes RV Park will be closed to all users during that time.

The triathlon will start at 7 a.m. Sunday, featuring a half-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride and 3-mile run in the Sprint category, and a half-distance Super Sprint competition. Registration is $150 for Sprint, $135 for Super Sprint and $25 for youth.
