Castle builders take to the sand Sunday in Corona del Mar

Want to build up your beach cred? The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce will present its 53rd annual sandcastle contest on Sunday at Corona del Mar State Beach.

Castle creators ranging from children to professional architects can compete in groups for prizes in categories such as most humorous and best overall.

If you’re planning to build, you can register in advance or sign up onsite starting at 9 a.m. the day of the event. If you just want to watch, you’ll get in free.

What: Sandcastle contest

When: 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday (sandcastle building from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)

Where: Corona del Mar State Beach, 3001 Ocean Blvd., Newport Beach

Entry fees:

• Architecture firms: $60

• Other businesses: $40

• Families, youth and civic groups, clubs, etc.: $30
