An 89-year-old man was killed Friday morning when an SUV broadsided his car at an intersection in an unincorporated Orange County area near Newport Beach, according to the CHP.

The man was driving a Toyota Camry east on Monte Vista Avenue near the intersection of Irvine Avenue about 9:45 a.m. just before the crash, CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said.

When the man turned left at the intersection, a Land Rover headed south on Irvine Avenue struck the Camry’s left side, Olivera said.

Officials don’t know yet if the Camry stopped at a stop sign at the intersection before turning left, Olivera said. Traffic on Irvine Avenue is not required to stop at the intersection.

It’s also unclear how fast the Land Rover was traveling.

Paramedics pronounced the Camry’s driver dead at the scene, Olivera said. Authorities have not released his identity.

A female passenger in the Camry was hurt. Olivera said CHP officials don’t know the extent of her injuries; she was taken to a trauma center in Santa Ana and is expected to survive.

A female driver and two children under age 5 were inside the Land Rover, but all three were uninjured, according to the CHP.

Investigators closed all southbound lanes of Irvine Avenue in the area for a few hours after the collision, but Olivera said the street had reopened by 1 p.m.

Officials are investigating the crash’s cause.
