More than 20,000 people put their legs to work Sunday in the Orange County Race for the Cure in Newport Beach to help the Susan G. Komen organization in its fight against breast cancer.

The event had raised nearly $1.28 million as of Monday morning, according to its website.

The 23rd Orange County Race for the Cure included two 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run/walks and a 1-mile children’s race, along with a breast-cancer survivor parade and tribute.

Susan G. Komen is a nonprofit founded in 1982 to promote breast-cancer education, research, advocacy, health services and support programs.
