Fashion Island in Newport Beach figures to be in the pink Sunday as Susan G. Komen Orange County presents its 24th annual Race for the Cure 5-kilometer runs to raise money for breast cancer research and related health services.

More than 1,200 local cancer survivors wearing pink beads will march the steps of the Pacific Life Insurance Co. building for a parade at 8:45 a.m. Afterward, a ceremony including the release of white doves will honor survivors and those who have died of the disease.

The event, which typically draws about 20,000 participants, is themed “There’s a Hero in You.”

“Breast cancer is a devastating disease that touches all of us, including me,” Race for the Cure Chairman Doug McKay, who lost his wife to cancer, said in a statement. “This year, we’re introducing unique elements to inspire individuals of all ages to step up and be a hero.”

The first 5K (3.1-mile) race will begin at 7:15 a.m. For the first time, participants in that race can test their speed with a timing chip placed on their shoes for a $5 fee.

A Kids One-Mile Fun Run & Walk will begin at 8 a.m., followed at 9:45 by a second 5K for those who prefer a slower pace.

The races will start on Newport Center Drive at Santa Barbara Drive.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised through the yearly event is distributed locally to help women receive breast health education, screening, treatment and support services. The rest supports the Komen organization’s grant programs for research.

According to the Komen website, participants in this year’s Orange County Race for the Cure already had raised more than $1 million as of Wednesday. Last year’s event raised $2.4 million, the group said.

Advance general registration for adults is $35. Breast cancer survivors, senior citizens and youths ages 6 to 17 pay $25. Race-day registration is $40 for all.

Children 5 and younger pay $5.
