Supplies, money sought for Newport’s hurricane-stricken sister city

Newport Beach residents can help Newport’s Mexican sister city Cabo San Lucas in the wake of Hurricane Odile, a Category 3 storm that tore through the Baja California peninsula early this week and left hundreds without water and power.

Azonic Insurance is collecting batteries, cellphone chargers, lanterns, cleaning supplies, mosquito repellent, bottles of water and other goods from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at 1617 Westcliff Drive, Suite 211, Newport Beach.

“There’s a lot of people in Newport who have lost their property there,” said Irene Krinsky, an agent with Azonic who is partnering with the Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association to send supplies to Cabo San Lucas and Laguna’s neighboring sister city, San Jose del Cabo.

The first round of donated supplies will be shipped next week.

Money can be donated for both hurricane-ravaged towns through checks made out to the Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association, with “Hurricane Odile 2014” written in the memo section. Mail checks to LBSCA, P.O. Box 1011, Laguna Beach, CA 92652.
