One person was taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash at Harbor Boulevard and South Coast Drive in Costa Mesa left one car dangling over a flood control channel around 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to a fire official.

Firefighters had to extricate the driver from a van involved in the collision, Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt. Darren De Fluiter said. The driver had a head injury and was taken to a trauma center but is expected to survive, according to Costa Mesa police.

A sedan involved in the crash ended up on a sidewalk with its front end jutting over a concrete flood channel just north of the 405 Freeway, De Fluiter said.

“One of the tires was hanging into that,” he said.

The driver of the sedan was not seriously injured and declined to be taken to a hospital.
