Biz News: Google Fiber Internet service may expand to Irvine

Share

Google announced Thursday that Irvine is among three more U.S. cities where the company is considering rolling out its high-speed Fiber Internet service.

The company said it hopes to enter a joint planning process with Irvine, San Diego and Louisville, Ky.

“To kick things off, we’ll work with Irvine, Louisville and San Diego to conduct a detailed study of factors that affect construction, such as local topography, housing density and the condition of existing infrastructure,” Jill Szuchmacher, director of Google Fiber Expansion, wrote in a Fiber blog post.

The three cities will need to complete a checklist, such as providing a map of utility lines, to prepare them for a large-scale fiber construction project.

At a speed of 1 gigabyte per second, Google Fiber is 100 times faster than the typical Internet service in the United States.

The system already is available in Texas, Kansas City, Mo., and Provo, Utah, and soon will be built in Nashville, Tenn., Atlanta, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Raleigh, N.C.
