Scholars to debate 2nd Amendment in honor of Constitution Day

Share

Two local legal scholars will face off at Orange Coast College on Tuesday over the merits of the 2nd Amendment in celebration of Constitution Day.

Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean of UC Irvine Law School, will return to OCC for a fifth year to debate John Eastman, the former dean of Chapman University Law School and the director of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence.

The pair will argue the merits of the 2nd Amendment — the right to bear arms — during the 75-minute session.

Chemerinsky and Eastman went head to head over same-sex marriage during last year’s Constitution Day debate.

The free event begins at 11:10 a.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre.

The forum is one of several events being held at OCC next week in celebration of the U.S. Constitution. In another, Coast Community College District Trustee Jerry Patterson, a former congressman, will discuss current constitutional issues with OCC political science professors Herrick Arnold and Rendall Drew on Sept. 17. The panel discussion is free and will be held at 11:10 a.m. in the Giles T. Brown Forum.

Orange Coast College is at 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa.

Constitution Day is Sept. 17.
