Share

An unidentified man robbed a Costa Mesa bank Monday morning after informing the teller that he had a gun and explosive device, according to police.

Around 9 a.m., a man wearing a baseball cap walked to the Bank of America inside the Vons at 2701 Harbor Blvd. and handed the teller a paper note demanding money.

The man did not brandish any gun, but the note claimed he had one and an explosive, police said.

The teller cooperated, after which the man escaped and was seen running northbound through the parking lot. Police were unable to locate the man or a getaway vehicle.

Costa Mesa detectives are working with the FBI to see if the man can be connected to a separate robbery in Orange earlier this month.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mario Garcia at (714) 754-5363.
