Around Town: Woman who was in famed Vietnam photo to speak in Newport

Kim Phuc, who was pictured in a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken during the Vietnam War, will share her story during a Friend Day service at 10 a.m. Sunday at Liberty Baptist Church in Newport Beach.

Phuc, now 52, was the 9-year-old girl seen running naked on the road after a napalm bomb was dropped on her village in South Vietnam by South Vietnamese forces in June 1972.

The service will be followed by a free barbecue lunch, bounce houses, giveaways and more.

Day of Service events scheduled in Costa Mesa

The nonprofit OneOC is helping to present two events in Costa Mesa to commemorate the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

• Working Wardrobes Patriotic Party: 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, 3030 Pullman St. Working Wardrobes provides services to help men, women, veterans and young adults overcome substance abuse, domestic violence, incarceration, homelessness and other challenges to enter the workforce.

• SeniorServ “Serve our Vets”: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Costa Mesa Senior Center, 695 W. 19th St. Volunteers will serve meals to seniors and honor veterans.

Jewish center to present High Holidays services

The Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Newport Beach is organizing free High Holidays services and programs at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa hotel.

The services are geared primarily to Jewish families in Orange County who are not affiliated with a synagogue.

According to the center, the services will blend traditional customs with contemporary messages, modern music and English readings, along with children’s programs.

The schedule:

• Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) services: 7 p.m. Sunday and 10 and 11:30 a.m. Monday; children’s service and program at 11 a.m.

• Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) services: 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 and 10 and 11:45 a.m. and 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 23; children’s service and program at 11 a.m.

Clippers training camp to be at UC Irvine

The Los Angeles Clippers are planning to hold training camp at UC Irvine beginning Sept. 26.

Two years ago, the NBA team held its camp in San Diego, and last year it was in Las Vegas.

The Clippers’ preseason opener is set for Oct. 2 at Staples Center in Los Angeles against the Denver Nuggets.

UCI Town and Gown coffee set for Sherman Gardens

UCI Town and Gown will hold its first event of the year on Wednesday with a Coffee and Conversation at Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar.

The group has had a morning coffee at Sherman Gardens every September for about 40 years and invites nonmembers to learn about its scholarship program for older students who have had a break in their education and for whom other scholarships are not available.

Wednesday’s event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Sherman Gardens, 2647 E. Coast Hwy.

O.C. Coastkeeper fundraiser coming Sept. 17

Tickets are on sale for Orange County Coastkeeper’s annual Toast the Coast fundraising event Sept. 17 at Back Bay Bistro at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort.

The benefit for the Costa Mesa-based environmental group will feature cocktails, appetizers, live music from reggae group Panjive and silent and live auctions.
