High surf, rip currents expected to start this afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard notice for Southern California starting Thursday afternoon, warning of possible high surf, rip currents and minor coastal flooding because of swells generated by Tropical Storm Norbert off the southern tip of Baja California.

The statement, which covers 2 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Tuesday, says a swell will move through area coastal waters Thursday afternoon and peak Friday night into Saturday.

“On Sunday into Monday ... a shorter-period and potentially larger swell may arrive along south-facing beaches,” the statement reads. “The combination of these swells and large tides will bring the potential of local coastal flooding at times of high tide. The elevated surf and large tidal swings will mean strong rip and long shore currents at area beaches.”

The agency said waves may build to 4 to 6 feet with local sets of 7 to 8 feet on some south- and southwest-facing beaches.
