Paddle-out to honor life of local surfer

The parents of a local surfer who died in Costa Mesa early this month are inviting members of the community to honor his life at a paddle-out Sunday morning.

Newport Beach native Michael McRoberts told friends that he was going to take a nap Aug. 3 but never woke up, his mother, Pat Kovalcheck, wrote in an email. He was 25.

It was the birthday of his brother, Kevin McRoberts, she wrote. Kevin, too, died in his sleep, not long after his 27th birthday in 2010.

Michael, who had been successfully battling substance abuse for several months when he died, broke his neck surfing off 53rd Street in Newport Beach in June. Kovalcheck wrote that the Orange County coroner has not yet determined the cause of his death.

Paddlers who want to commemorate McRoberts’ life should gather near 53rd Street at 9 a.m., Kovalcheck wrote.
