A two-car crash in Newport Coast sent three people to the hospital Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The two cars, a Mazda Protege and a Toyota Scion, were traveling in opposite directions along Newport Coast Drive around 10:30 a.m. when one of them made a left turn at Pelican Hill Road South, police said.

At that point, the cars collided, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

The Scion was carrying a passenger, Manzella said.

All three were taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and are expected to survive their injuries, according to police.

Officials closed all southbound lanes and one northbound lane on Newport Coast Drive for a short time after the crash, police said.

The roadway was completely open by about 11:15 a.m., Manzella said.
