Firefighters stop small brush fire in Talbert Regional Park

A small blaze that firefighters doused Tuesday afternoon was likely set in Talbert Regional Park intentionally, Costa Mesa fire officials said.

Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa fire crews responded to reports of a brush fire just after 4 p.m. in the area of the park that sits next to a city-operated playground on Victoria Avenue in Costa Mesa.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which burned about 100 square feet of brush, in 45 minutes, said Tim Vasin, a battalion chief with the Costa Mesa Fire Department.

Tuesday’s blaze was the fifth fire in Talbert and nearby Fairview Park this year.

“The fires aren’t being started by natural causes in this area,” Vasin said.

The arson unit is working to determine an exact cause.
