Animal center to hold first fundraiser
The Little Ones Animal Center in Costa Mesa will present its first fundraiser Saturday.
The event, featuring rescued animals, will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Orange Coast Buick/GMC/Cadillac dealership at 2600 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa.

Speak Up Newport awards scholarships
Two Newport Beach high school graduates were awarded scholarships from Speak Up Newport for their contributions to the community.
Speak Up Newport, a nonprofit residents group, grants two $1,500 scholarships annually to graduating seniors at Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools.
Ryan Farhat-Sabet, a member of the National Forensics League with an interest in public speaking, is this year’s winner from Corona del Mar. Farhat-Sabet graduated in the top 5% of his class, was on the principal’s honor roll and was a National Merit scholar. He plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis and pursue a career in medicine or business.
Samantha Schroff, a member of the Newport Beach Mayor’s Youth Council for three years, is this year’s winner from Newport Harbor. Schroff founded the Newport Harbor Youth for Hope Club chapter, where she displayed a passion for helping homeless children in Orange County. She also co-founded Club Casa de los Ninos, which collects clothing and athletic equipment for a Boys & Girls Club in Mexico. She plans to attend USC to study the science of revitalizing urban space.
The scholarships, which have been awarded since 1989, are in memory of Dorothy Hardcastle, a longtime resident of Newport Beach and an original member of Speak Up Newport.

Assistance League helps schoolchildren
The Assistance League of Newport-Mesa helped 179 children this week by giving them clothes, school supplies and a gift card for shoes. Volunteers dressed as “tooth fairies” helped promote oral health education.
The organization began Operation School Bell in 1982 and has since served more than 40,000 students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District with back-to-school items.

Costa Mesa High schedules annual gala
Beat the Drum for the Arts, a gala to benefit Costa Mesa High School, is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at South Coast Plaza’s Garden Terrace.
The event will include presentations, student performances, a silent auction and dancing. Attire is cocktail/semiformal.
Tickets are $75 per person if bought before Sept. 10, or $100 per person at the door. Couples will pay $150 at the door.
Proceeds will benefit Costa Mesa High’s arts and sciences academies and Mandarin language program.
