UC Irvine placed first in Sierra Club's annual ranking of green campuses nationwide, the university announced Tuesday.

UCI's most recent accolade marks the fifth consecutive year that the university has been included in the top 10 greenest campuses nationwide, according to a news release.

Sierra Club, an environmental organization, has published a list of the most environmentally conscious schools in its magazine for the past eight years.

"At our commencement ceremony this year, President [Barack] Obama praised UCI for being 'ahead of the curve' on climate change research, energy efficiency and sustainability," Howard Gillman, interim chancellor and provost said in a prepared statement. "Sierra magazine's No. 1 ranking is further recognition of our national leadership in these areas."

The Sierra Club commended the university for its academic and research achievements in addressing climate issues and sustainability, as well as its energy efficiency goals that exceed federal and state benchmarks, the release stated.
