A station wagon driven by a Costa Mesa man struck and killed an 89-year-old pedestrian as he was walking across the street in Huntington Beach on Friday morning, police said.

About 10:20 a.m., the driver, 41, was headed east on Hamilton Avenue when his gray 2012 Ford Focus struck the elderly man, who was crossing just west of Via Straits Lane, police said.

It appears the victim was not in a crosswalk and not crossing at a traffic light, Sgt. Jon Haught said.
