Newport Beach police are looking for two men who reportedly held a man at gunpoint in his car while they robbed him on the Balboa Peninsula late Wednesday.

The victim called police shortly after midnight Thursday and said he had been robbed about a half-hour earlier near Cypress Street and Edgewater Avenue, about two blocks west of the Balboa Fun Zone, said Jennifer Manzella, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

He said he was in his car and parked near a curb when two men surprised him at the passenger-side window, which was open, according to police. Both were carrying what looked like semiautomatic handguns and had their faces covered, the man told police.

One of the robbers demanded the man’s cash, cellphone and wallet while the other stood watch, police said. The pair then fled toward the Fun Zone.

The man drove to a friend’s home in Irvine and called Newport Beach police, Manzella said.

Police canvassed the area on the peninsula but couldn’t find witnesses to the robbery, possibly because of the delay in reporting it, Manzella said.

One robber was described as Latino, 23 to 30 years old, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall and with a thin build. The other was also Latino but slightly shorter and heavier.
