Newport Beach police said they found drugs in a man’s car after a short high-speed pursuit near Newport Harbor High School on Monday evening.

Just after 7 p.m., an officer saw a red Chrysler speeding through stop signs on 15th Street near Irvine Avenue, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

She said the driver wouldn’t pull over, and the officer chased the car until it slowed and eventually stopped a few blocks north at Sherington Place near Irvine Avenue.

More officers arrived, and police arrested Royce Daniel Hill Jr., 36, of Orange on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, evading a peace officer, expired registration, driving without a valid license, failure to stop at a stop sign and driving at an unsafe speed.

During a follow-up investigation, police found methamphetamine and remnants of marijuana, Manzella said.

Hill was booked on $20,000 bail, according to court records.
