NBFD responds to 2 injury calls

On their way back from a rescue in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach firefighters found themselves responding to a crash that critically injured a pedestrian and also hurt her dog.

In the first incident, which took place at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Newport and Laguna Beach fire departments rescued an injured man in the back country near Crystal Cove State Park, according to a Newport fire official.

Crews found a man with a shoulder injury in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and got him to the park entrance at the top of Ridge Park Road in Newport Coast, according to Newport Fire Capt. Glenn White.

The injured man was evaluated by Newport paramedics and transported to a hospital.

As Newport firefighters returned from the rescue, they found a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle at San Joaquin Hills and Ridge Park roads.

The vehicle struck her while she and her small dog were in a crosswalk, throwing her into the air and across the pavement, White said.

The victim was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo as a critical trauma case, but her condition was unknown, White said.

The dog was also injured, White said, adding that its condition was unknown.

Newport Beach police received a call about the incident at 7:36 p.m. and are investigating, spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.
