Water main break closes Jeffrey Road

A water main break in Irvine spilled about 35,000 gallons of recycled water Tuesday evening, shutting down part of Jeffrey Road, according to the Irvine Ranch Water District.

It only took crews about 40 minutes to turn off the leaking water, but the break shut closed all southbound lanes of Jeffrey Road between Barranca and Alton parkways until Wednesday morning, said water district spokeswoman Shannon Reed.

After repairing the 16-inch mainline, crews opened one southbound lane at about 6:30 a.m., Reed said.

Water started leaking when a 4-inch valve connected to the mainline failed, according to the district.

Officials did not immediately know why the valve failed.

The part was between 25 and 30 years old, Reed said.

The pipe was carrying recycled water from the district’s plant on Michelson Drive to customers who mostly use it to water parks and medians, Reed said.

All lanes of Jeffrey will reopen when a contractor finishes repaving the asphalt, according to Reed.

[For the record, 1:25 p.m. Aug. 6: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the recycled water is used at schools. It is used to water some fields at schools.]
