Around Town: Wake Up Newport to host UCI law school dean

Erwin Chemerinsky, the founding dean of the UC Irvine School of Law, will speak about recent Supreme Court decisions at Thursday’s Wake Up Newport event.

Chemerinsky will discuss the high court’s decisions about same-sex marriage, the Affordable Care Act, redistricting, employment discrimination and the death penalty.

The event will be held from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Friends Room in the Newport Beach Public Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

At-risk girls get incentive day at South Coast Plaza

Santa Ana-based nonprofit Community Service Programs recently took about 20 girls to Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza and The Lab Antimall as part of an incentive program.

The July 23 event was “meant to steer young, at-risk girls in the right direction,” according to a news release. The participants were from Anaheim junior high schools.

The girls also visited Anaheim Hills Golf Course for lunch.

Caravan of vintage VWs to visit Costa Mesa

The 17th annual Treffen caravan of vintage Volkswagens will stop in Costa Mesa on Saturday.

The cars are scheduled to arrive at the Days Inn, 2100 Newport Blvd., around 5 p.m. A barbecue party will follow.

The caravan’s trip began July 31 in Port Angeles, Wash., and will end Sunday in San Diego.

The trip is organized by Ventura-based Airhead Parts.

Meet the Mayor session Sunday in Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa Mayor Steve Mensinger will present a Meet the Mayor session from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the mayor’s office at City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.

Those who attend will have a chance to interact with Mensinger and Gary Armstrong, the city’s economic and development services director and deputy chief executive.

Residents also can arrange to meet with Mensinger about specific issues by calling Sharon Rodelius at (714) 754-5107.

Reid Day School to host Science Olympiad

Reid Day School in Costa Mesa will host a Science Olympiad Fun Day for students and their families from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Students will travel through the school’s classrooms to build and complete science challenges, such as Gummi Bear launch pads, foil boats and paper airplanes. The event will end with a closing ceremony for participants and a pizza party.

“What we’re trying to do is open our learning center to the local community and share our hopes for our special population of students,” said school director Lisa Reid.

The school, at 151 Kalmus Drive, is for students considered twice-exceptional, meaning they are gifted and have a learning, emotional or behavioral issue, Reid said.

Shawn and Michelle Steel to speak at Tea Party meeting

Husband and wife Shawn and Michelle Steel will speak during the Newport-Mesa Tea Party meeting Aug. 13.

Michelle Steel, an Orange County supervisor, will discuss the county’s pension challenges, budgets, the effects of Covered California on residents and businesses, and the proposed toll lanes on the 405 Freeway through Costa Mesa.

Shawn Steel, who represents the California Republican Party to the Republican National Committee, will speak about the Republican presidential candidates, immigration, the party’s recruiting efforts with Asian-Americans and other issues.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Halecrest Swim and Tennis Club, 3107 Killybrooke Lane, Costa Mesa.
