Kids got hands-on with science Saturday during a free event at the Newport Beach-based nonprofit ExplorOcean.

The ocean literacy center encourages kids to explore at their own pace and learn about the ocean around them through science, technology, engineering and math programs.

Saturday's Day of Building provided them with games, prizes and projects like box car construction.

The center launched in 2013 at 600 East Bay Avenue in Newport Beach after rebranding itself from the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

ExplorOcean is hosting other educational events throughout the summer. More information is available at explorocean.org.
