Area man is one of the fittest worldwide

Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Bryan Wadkins is retaining his title as one of the top 10 fittest men worldwide, as measured by the CrossFit workout program.

During the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games in Carson, Wadkins finished seventh in the Masters category for men between 40 and 44 years old. His competitors during the three day event that ran Tuesday through Thursday included men from as far away as Amsterdam and Australia, Wadkins said.

“It was a good week,” Wadkins said. “So many people came out to support me.”

One of those in Wadkins’s corner was Police Chief Tom Gazsi, who attended one night with one of his daughters who does CrossFit.

The physical feats Wadkins performed included dragging a sled loaded with 180 pounds, performing 30 headstand push-ups and 30 pull ups as fast he could. And that was just one category.

Wadkins finished third in the Nancy, where competitors run 400 meters and perform 15 squats holding a barbell overhead five times while being timed.

But there’s no rest for the weary. Still sore, he was back to a normal day of work Friday.

“I’ve got things to do,” the special events sergeant said.

Next year, he hopes to return to the Games.

“Definitely my goal is to get back in and get on that podium,” he said.
