The Irvine woman involved in a violent single-car crash in Newport Coast Wednesday morning has died, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.

Karine Bondra, 46, died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, about seven and a half hours after the crash in which she was ejected from her car, leaving her with critical injuries.

Bondra was driving south on Newport Coast Drive near Pelican Hill Road South when her vehicle crossed over the center divider and rolled over, according to descriptions from police and the coroner’s office.

Police originally said Bondra was a Laguna Beach resident.

Bondra was a teacher in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. She most recently taught at Harbor View and Woodland elementary schools, according to Corona del Mar Today.

“This is a tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time,” Boss told Corona del Mar Today.

No one else was injured in the crash. Bondra was the only one in her car.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, but Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said Wednesday that speed was likely a factor.

Police asked that anyone with information about the crash contact Investigator Scott Grecco at (949) 644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.
