An Irvine woman was ejected from her vehicle and left in critical condition after a crash in Newport Coast Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Karine A. Bondra, 46, apparently was traveling south on Newport Coast Drive near Pelican Hill Road South when her vehicle crossed over the center divider, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

Paramedics responded to a 911 call about the crash at about 11:30 a.m. and took Bondra to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, police said.

Manzella said she did not yet know whether Bondra’s vehicle hit anything after crossing the center divider but said her car was the only one involved.

Nobody else was in the vehicle, and the driver was the only person injured, according to police.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, but speed is likely a factor, Manzella said.

Police asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Investigator Scott Grecco at (949) 644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.

[For the record, 11:15 a.m. July 24: An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed the woman’s city of residence as Laguna Beach instead of Irvine.]
