Police stop man who threatened to jump from building

Police say they pulled a man to safety after he threatened to jump off the fifth floor of a Costa Mesa dining and entertainment center last week.

Shortly before midnight Thursday, a security guard called authorities about a man on the top story of a parking structure at The Triangle, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

The man had been kneeling on a four-foot pillar outside the parking structure’s railing as if he were about to plunge onto 19th Street, police said.

When officers arrived, the man was back inside the railing but still threatening to jump, police said.

Costa Mesa police said one of the department’s hostage negotiators, Officer James Brown, began talking with the man, a 55-year-old Costa Mesa resident who complained about depression and past medical problems.

Another officer was able to grab the man when he reached down to balance himself for a moment, according to the CMPD.

Authorities took the man to Hoag Hospital where he was voluntarily admitted, police said.
